Week 15: Final Reflections

It’s hard to believe I’m done! I didn’t expect to get so emotional after wrapping up my presentation, but I definitely cried last night. Mostly, I was overwhelmed with gratitude for all the support I’ve received the past few years, from my MCAD peers, professors, my husband and friends.

Thinking back on my capstone goals, I feel like I mostly hit my goals: I developed a business model, brand, and web prototype for the Rural Design Studio. I haven’t yet gotten the WordPress site done, and that will take more time than I anticipated. I will also probably revisit my diner menu marketing piece. Translating my Figma prototype to a WordPress site has been the biggest challenge, largely because this is my first time building a WordPress site from the ground up; however, this is a challenge I want to complete, as I feel it will help me at work and with future freelance projects.

My biggest takeaway is that I really love branding and graphic and web design work, moreso than the technical aspects of web development. This has proven true across this program, but its an important thing to acknowledge as I start building my portfolio site and positioning my skills for future work.

In terms of what comes next: This coming year, I will be deep in the work of overseeing Carleton’s website redesign, which entails applying a new standard theme to 660+ sites. With extra time, I need to actually build my portfolio site, finish the RDS site, and start getting the gears turning on that.

A final big thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way!
