Before election week, we took a little road trip down to Viroqua, Wisconsin. We stayed in a cozy tiny house, ate incredible food from The Driftless Cafe, watched almost all of The Queen’s Gambit, and hiked around the bluffs of the Mississippi.

Lena’s parents have one of the best gardens, and it grew up alongside her…her first year coincided with a move to a new house with a big yard. It was only fitting that she was most photogenic among the kale and pepper plants. This shoot was filled with all the best fall colors, and some of my dearest friends.

I had the pleasure of photographing my first puppy family session at Whitetail Woods with Tyler, Mitch, and their three very quick but super lovable dogs. We caught all the fall golden hour rays and got some great non-blurry headshots of all involved. Enjoy!

Courtney and James are two of my favorite people, so when they asked me to take some baby bump photos, I was both honored and excited. This was officially my first maternity shoot, and I couldn’t have asked for a more sweet or adorable family. We warmed up with a few trial shots at Keepsake Cidery in Dundas, Minnesota, then strolled around downtown Northfield before making a quick pit-stop by the Carleton Arboretum before the bugs devoured us.
I can’t wait to meet their little one and watch these two parent. For now, here are some of my favorites of these three.

For my own posterity, I wanted to track how the exponential curve toward a new understanding of reality took shape in my mind during the beginning of COVID. Our ability as a species to reach a place of equilibrium, to “normalize” almost any state that continues for longer than a couple of weeks, is also fascinating (even if biologically sensible). I want to slow down my memory, notice better, try to learn some things from this once in a lifetime (fingers crossed) global pandemic.

After not really leaving our house for a couple of months, when the governor okayed “dispersed camping,” we packed our backpacks and spent a couple of days exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota. From bison to wild horses, badlands to prairies, we still left feeling socially distanced but with an itch to return.

In early 2020, before the world shut down, I invited my mom on an Atlanta/Alabama trip. I’ve not spent much time in the American South, and I was very curious what the mood and general landscape were of Alabama in 2020. The trip was both sobering and encouraging. As we continue to come to terms with the way racism lives on in this country, I urge others to visit Alabama, and especially check out the work of EJI in Montgomery.
